I first made this recipe last year for a fun family holiday get together. But just because holidays may look different this year does not mean that we cannot enjoy easy and tasty festive snacks! And these peppermint chocolate covered pretzels were hands down a fan favorite at the party. So needless to say, they had to make a comeback.
Why Peppermint Essential Oils?
In this recipe, I decided to use peppermint essential oil instead of peppermint extract. Not only is the combination of peppermint and chocolate an award winning duo, but peppermint essential oil actually has a ton of health benefits! While we are using only a small amount of peppermint essential oil per pretzel, I do want to mention some of the ways that I use it.
- Used topically, peppermint essential oil can be used in a variety of ways but the two that I use it the most for are headaches and muscle soreness. When it comes to stress and tension that builds into a headache, I like to add a drop to my temples to and rub. Not only does the peppermint oil help relieve the tension as it absorbs into my skin, but I also love the calming smell. Another way to relieve a tension headache is by adding a drop to your thumb and pushing your thumb to the roof of your mouth for at least a minute. Trust me this does the trick all the time!
- As for the body, I love to create a muscle tension rub using peppermint oil, but also rubbing the essential oil itself on a sore area helps a ton. It has an amazing cooling sensation.
- Peppermint oil can also be super beneficial when it comes to digestive issues. It helps to relax the muscles of the GI tract and it has an anti-inflammatory effect. I love to add it into warm water or a tea to create a blend.
- And if you aren’t convinced yet, did you just drink a cup of black coffee and forget that you have to meet with someone? Add a drop to the roof of your mouth and voila, minty fresh breath!
LET’S MAKE THIS 4 INGREDIENT SNACK:
Start by laying out your pretzels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. This step is not necessary but I always find it easier so that I know I have enough room on the tray prior to melting the chocolate. We definitely do not want to run out of room here!
Next the fun part! I decided to make these two different ways
- Simply dip half of the pretzel in the melted chocolate + peppermint essential oil combination. Then add sprinkles (or crushed candy canes, also I delicious option!)
- Use a fork to dip the whole pretzel in the melted chocolate + peppermint essential oil combination and flip around until the pretzel is completely covered. Then add the sprinkles!
SO… what will you need to make these peppermint chocolate covered pretzels?
- Gluten Free Pretzels
- Baking Chocolate
- Peppermint Essential Oil
- Sprinkles or Crushed Candy Canes
Can I make any substitutions or add more ingredients?
- Gluten Free Mini Pretzels: you can certainly substitute with regular pretzels but personally whether you are gluten free or not, I highly recommend the gluten free because they are so crunchy!
- Chocolate: any kind of melting chocolate will work but I love to use these Hu Gems since they are refined sugar free, dairy free and vegan!
- Peppermint Essential Oils: you can definitely use peppermint extract!
- Sprinkles: you can leave these out or replace with your favorite topping. I would suggest crushed candy canes, chocolate sprinkles or a drizzle of white chocolate.
