Ever since I was a kid, stuffing has been my all time favorite Thanksgiving food. And do not worry, mashed potatoes and gravy is definitely a close second. But stuffing has always remained #1 in my heart. When I first started learning to cook, I found that most recipes online used the packaged stuffing mixes. From that point, I made it a mission to make my own kind of stuffing that was full of whole foods, fresh spices and minimal time, ingredients and kitchen equipment.
SO… what will you need to make this healthier apple herb stuffing?
- Bread (gluten free if needed)
- White onion
- Celery
- Apple
- Olive oil
- Milk (dairy free is needed)
- Vegetable broth
- Egg whites
- Fresh thyme
- Fresh rosemary
- Garlic cloves
- Black pepper and salt
Easy Steps:
- Dice up all of your ingredients first – this will make it so much faster. You can also add all dry ingredients together in a bag and store until ready to make the healthier apple herb stuffing
- Add diced bread, white onion, celery, and apple into a mixing bowl. Mix well.
- Add olive oil, milk, egg whites, vegetable broth, chopped thyme, chopped rosemary, minced garlic, black pepper and salt in a separate bowl or liquid mixing cup. Whisk together until fully combined
- Pour liquid mixture over the dry ingredients and toss until each piece is coated.
- Add stuffing into an safe oven dish. I used a 13×9 dish.
- Bake at 350 for 40 minutes!
Can I make any substitutions or add more ingredients?
- Bread: any sliced bread or gluten free sliced bread should work. I have not tested with softer breads, such as challah or italian, and have not tested with sourdough but I could imagine you would be able to replace it! I used Wegman’s Multigrain Sliced Bread in this recipe.
- Apple: pears would work as well! If not, feel free to omit.
- Olive oil: melted butter, ghee or avocado oil would work.
- Milk: any choice of milk. I used unsweetened plain almond milk
- Egg whites: you could replace with 1 egg or 1 flax egg
- Vegetable broth: any broth will work, such as beef, chicken, turkey, etc.
