This healthy stovetop turkey chili is one of my oldest Naturally Being Nat recipes that I have posted. Back when I started my instagram during college, I think this was my second or third post. While the quality of the photos has improved immensely, the quality of this turkey chili is still just as good. I have made it too many times to count so I knew that it had to make it an appearance on the blog.
When it comes to shooting my dinner recipes in the winter, it has definitely been a challenge. Since I work full time, I often use my weeknight dinners as the recipe test and if it turns out good, I recreate the recipe on the weekend to shoot in natural light. Luckily with the snow and cloudy days lately, I have had amazing days to photograph recipes without any harsh shadows or blue tints from the winter skies.
SO… what will you need to make this healthy stovetop turkey chili?
- Olive Oil
- Onion
- Carrots
- Ground Turkey
- Black Beans
- Corn
- Diced Tomatoes
- Tomato Paste
- Broth
- And a few spices!
- Oh and toppings… ALWAYS toppings
What to pair with the the chili?
So many ways to eat this chili! First, let’s talk classic chili with toppings. My favorite toppings are limes, cilantro, avocado and a side of chips. One of my favorite things to do is use Siete chips and crush them up to add on top.
I also love to use this chili as part of a meal as well. Often I will add it on top of a carb source such as rice, brown rice pasta, chickpea pasta, zoodles or cauliflower rice. All are great!
Can I make this Whole30 or Paleo?
To make this Whole30 or Paleo approved, remove the corn and beans, and then reduce the amount of broth to 1/2 cup. You can also replace by adding more vegetables or ground turkey.
How do I reheat this?
To reheat this recipe, you can either use the stovetop or the microwave. If using the stovetop, simply add to a saucepan on low heat and cover for 5-6 minutes for a single serving. If using the microwave, add a serving to a microwave safe bowl and reheat for 2 to 2 1/2 minutes. For both reheating options, stir occasionally so that there is even heating throughout the whole bowl.
Can I make any substitutions or add more ingredients?
- Canned goods: you can easily use fresh black beans or corn for this recipe. I love to add fresh and frozen corn to this recipe.
- Ground turkey: you can use any ground meat or meat substitute. If you want to make this vegan or vegetarian, you can remove the ground turkey and use a can of pinto beans. I would reduce the amount of broth as well.
- Want more vegetables? Throw in some spinach or kale for some hearty leafy greens!
